Firefox Setup for Macs

CengageNOWv2 supports Firefox versions 52.0 or greater for Macs. To check your system's version of Firefox, select Firefox in the menu bar and click About Firefox.

The following settings will help you get the best performance from CengageNOWv2. If you have problems with CengageNOWv2 later on, begin your troubleshooting by reconfirming these settings. Instructions for Firefox 54.0 shown below.


Note: For use with CengageNOWv2, Firefox must be configured to enable cookies and pop-ups.

Allowing Cookies in Firefox for Macs

CengageNOWv2 uses cookies to recognize you and your preferences when you sign in. Here's how to enable them in Firefox 54.0 for Macs.

To enable cookies in Firefox for Macs
  1. 1. Open your Firefox browser.
  2. 2. With the Firefox browser window selected, select Firefox on the menu bar and click Preferences.
  3. 3. Click the Privacy icon.
  4. 4. Under History select Use custom settings for history in the Firefox will: drop-down menu.
  5. 5. Select Accept cookies from sites, if it is not selected already.
  6. 6. Select Always for Accept third party cookies.
  7. 7. Select they expire for Keep until.
  8. 8. Close the Preferences window when you are done.

Allowing Pop-ups in Firefox for Macs

CengageNOWv2 uses pop-up windows to display error messages and Help. Here's how to enable them in Firefox 54.0 for Macintosh.

To enable all pop-ups in Firefox for Macs
  1. 1. Open your Firefox browser.
  2. 2. With the Firefox browser window selected, go to Firefox on the menu bar and select Preferences
  3. 3. Click the Content icon.
  4. 4. If necessary, clear the check box for Block pop-up windows.
  5. 5. Close the Preferences window when you are done.

  6. Note: There are many third-party pop-up blockers (Google, Yahoo!, etc.) available for internet browsers. If you are using any of these, consult their directions for instructions on allowing pop-ups.

Configuring Page Refresh in FireFox for Macs

Your browser cache settings determine how Web pages are stored or refreshed in your system's memory. Optimal cache settings help display your CengageNOWv2 pages quickly and correctly.

To configure page refresh in Firefox for Macs
  1. 1. In the Firefox Location bar (address line), type about:config and press the Return key.
  2. 2. Click I accept the risk! on the This might void your warranty! page.
  3. A list of preferences will appear in your browser window.

  4. 3. In the Filter input box that appears at the top of the page, type browser.cache and press the Return key. This will limit the list of preferences.
  5. 4. Double-click browser.cache.check_doc_frequency in the Preference Name list.
  6. The Enter integer value window appears.

  7. 5. Type 1 in the input box for browser.cache.check_doc_frequency.
  8. 6. Click OK and close the about:config tab on Firefox when you are done.

Clearing the Cache and Cookies in Firefox for Macs

If you ever start seeing errors in CengageNOWv2, a good first troubleshooting step is to clear your Firefox browser cache and cookies. When cookies are cleared, you will need to reselect your school the next time you sign in.

To clear the Firefox cache and cookies
  1. 1. Open your Firefox browser.
  2. 2. Click the Open menu icon on the Firefox menu bar.
  3. 3. Select History.
  4. 4. Click Clear Recent History.
  5. 5. (Optional) Make a selection in Time range to clear, if you are also selecting to clear Browsing & Download History.
  6. 6. Select the check boxes for Cookies and Cache.
  7. 7. Click Clear Now to empty your cache and clear your system of all cookies.

  8. Note: It is also possible to highlight individual cookies and selectively remove them by clicking remove individual cookies.
