Edit Properties Tab
When editing or creating questions in the Question Editor, clicking the Edit Properties icon opens a pane of options allowing you to set a wide variety of preferences. The property settings and grading features found on this tab are universal to most questions. Alter the default values to affect the functioning and appearance of the template you're editing. For detailed information on a specific question template, including authoring instructions, see Authoring Specific Question Types.
Note: Before leaving the Edit properties tab, always be sure to click the Insert button to apply your changes.
Display NameThis is an optional field you can use to enter a consistent, user-friendly name to appear throughout CNOWv2, including assignment takes and in Gradebook reports. By default, this field is populated with Question Name you initially provided when selecting your template.
Note: Choosing the assignment option to Hide question labels, hides both the Question Name and Display Name in your assignments.
NarrativeUse this field to link the current question to a Narrative item. A Narrative contains text, images, exhibits, or other information that is reused and displayed consistently in multiple questions. Your students can see this linked content as part of the question as it appears in their assignment.
By linking a Narrative to multiple questions, you can avoid the repeated effort of authoring the same content separately for each question. To link a Narrative to the current question, enter the exact name and/or directory path. (e.g. "narrative_01.xml" or "/geyser/VM_DB1985/items/160991/narrative_01.xml")
Grading ModeUse the Grading Mode menu to specify whether all parts of the question must be answered correctly to receive credit or whether partial credit is allowed. (Not available to Essay questions.)
- ° All correct answers required. Used when every aspect of the answer needs to be correct for students to receive credit.
- ° Partial credit given. Used to provide partial credit in cases where some of the student's answer is correct.
For any question with more than one correct answer, the method for calculating Partial credit is (#correct - #incorrect) / #total_correct.
- ° Permutated credit given. Used in cases where credit is given no matter what order the answers are in. Only a totally wrong response causes a loss of credit. (Available only for Fill in the Blank questions.)
Electronic GradabilityUse this property to determine the type of grading method you prefer for individual questions. Later, when you're choosing content for your assignments, it's possible to filter for questions by their gradability setting.
The default value for this property depends on the question's preferred grading method. For example: Essay questions default to requires manual grading. The three possible values are defined below.
- ° not intended to be graded. Used in questions created to contain information not intended to be graded. (For example: information contained in a Narrative would not carry a grade.)
- ° requires manual grading. Used in Essay questions as no grading algorithm is available.
- ° electronically gradable. Used in questions that allow grading by CengageNOWv2.
Note: Gradability information is used to prompt a response from you on manually graded questions before the overall assignment grade can be issued.
Tolerant GradingSelect from one of two options for this property:
- ° Use Authored. sets the grading so that the correct response needs to be exactly as authored.
- ° Enable Loose. sets the grading as less strict.
The loose setting forces a numerical substitution and comparison of random values for all variations of equivalencies for an equation. A variety of answers can be considered correct as long as the values are the same.
