Managing Grades > Querying Student Data

Querying Student Data

Use this function as a handy reference when you need specific information about student performance or assignment details. To access the Gradebook Search page, go to the Gradebook page and open the Student menu (mortarboard icon). Select the Query Student Data link; this opens the Gradebook Search page.

To begin a search, first select whether to search within the course or a specific assignment, then define your search parameters using the dropdown menus. The filters you select determine what additional options are available. For example, choosing Time Spent brings up a text box specifically for entering a time.

It is also possible to do more than one search at a time. Click the Add Criteria button to bring up another row of filter boxes, or remove rows by clicking the Remove Criteria button. Use the Clear button to clear all selections and return the Gradebook Search page back to its default state.

Note: When you select multiple options for your search criteria, your search is performed in an "AND" fashion rather than an "OR" fashion.

When you are done selecting filters, click the Search button to view the Search Results page with all possible student matches and their email addresses displayed according to the search criteria you set. See Sending an Email via a Student Query for information on messaging students from the Search Results page.

You can filter your search with the following criteria:

Search criteria with Course selected:

Search criteria with Assignment selected:

Filtering by Adjusted or Unadjusted Score:

If you select Unadjusted Score when performing a query, you are excluding any of the following adjustments that can be made to the assignment(s) you are querying.

If you select Adjusted Score when performing a query, all of the adjustments in the list above can have an impact.

Note: A query using Adjusted Score does not apply any category weights when the Gradebook Preference for Grades is set to Total points.

In both cases (Unadjusted Score and Adjusted Score), any manual over-rides you have performed on the assignment scores are included.

Example: Sally Student scored 8/10 on an assignment, but your manual over-ride changes her score to 9 /10. If you run a query that involves this assignment, and choose Unadjusted Score, 9/10 is returned.

If, on the other hand, your query uses Adjusted Score, then any other grading factors are included. For instance, if the assignment is associated with a weighted grading category, the 9/10 is moved up or down depending on the impact of that grading category.
