Modifying Dates

The Modify Dates page supplies you with various options for setting dates for assignment availability. You can change any date and time by opening the adjacent calendar icon and choosing new settings. For assignments that allow it, you can also set options for the display of question content, scores, responses, and feedback.

When editing assignments as a section instructor, you can edit the Available, Due, and Unavailable dates for any assignment shared with the parent course. Your changes only take effect in your section, the same assignments shared at the course level and in other sections are unaffected.

You access the Modify Dates page by selecting one or more assignments on the Assignments page and clicking the Modify Dates button. (You may need to click Show All Options if the Modify Dates button is hidden.)

Depending on which method you need, you can choose from three views of the Modify Dates page as described below:

Specify Same Dates for All

Allows you to quickly set the same Available, Due, and Unavailable dates for all the selected assignments. When all of your selected assignments allow it, you can set additional options for the display of assignment results, feedback, and responses.

Specify Dates for Each

Allows you to set the dates for assignments individually, and in those assignments allowing it, you can edit options controlling the availability of assignment results.

Adjust all assignment dates based on the earliest Available Date (highlighted below) to:

Allows you to set the dates for all assignments relative to the assignment with the earliest Available date. This option is especially useful when working with a copied course or a template course already pre-populated with assignments and require adjusting the dates en masse.

The earliest Available date is highlighted in blue and when two or more assignments share the same earliest date/time, the assignment with the lowest row number is highlighted.

When the Adjust all assignment dates based on the earliest Available Date (highlighted below) to: option is selected, a new date field appears at the top of the page. You use this field to enter a new date that changes the earliest Available date. Clicking Done on the calendar widget automatically updates all dates (of the assignments on the page) relative to the date you just entered. When you are finished, click the Save dates button to save your current changes and return to the Assignments page.


Note: You can also edit a date field to make any other assignment have the earliest Available date.

Available (or Starts On)

Determines the date and time when students can start taking an assignment. Use the calendar icon to open the calendar tool to specify an exact setting.

Due

Determines date and time after which the assignment is no longer available to take for full credit.

If you don't want to set a Due date, select No Due Date. (Not an option for ASP assignments.)

Unavailable (or Ends On)

Determines date and time when students can no longer start, resume, or complete the assignment after the Due date has passed (or when a course is no longer available). If a student is working on the assignment when the Unavailable date and time arrives, the assignment is stopped and scored on progress to that point (generally with a late penalty applied).

To add a Penalty for submissions after due date or a Subsequent penalty past due assignments, you can do so from the assignment options panel. See Choosing Assignment Options for more details.

Show Assignment Score

Allows you to determine when or if students are able to see their assignment's overall score. Your available options are Never, Immediately after taken or a specific date and time. (This option is not available for Reading and ASP assignments.)

When Never is selected, the options for Plus Show Details, Responses, Scores and Plus Solutions and Extra Feedback are automatically disabled and set to Never; any previously entered dates are also removed.

Plus Show Details, Responses, Scores

Allows you to determine when or if students are able to see question details as well as their answers and scores for individual questions. Your available options are Never, Immediately after taken or a specific date and time. (This option is not available for Reading, External, and ASP assignments.)

When Never is selected, the option for Plus Solutions and Extra Feedback is automatically disabled and set to Never; any previously entered dates are also removed.

Plus Solutions and Extra Feedback

Allows you to determine when or if students are able to see the correct answers and post-submission feedback. Your available selections are Never, Immediately after taken, or a specific date and time. (This option is not available for Reading, External, and ASP assignments.)


Note: Any edits you make to the availability of assignment scores, question details, responses, and feedback are automatically applied to the same settings on the Assignment Options page. For further details, see Editing Assignment Options.

To modify dates for existing assignments
  1. 1. Go to the Assignments overview page and make the appropriate selection, if necessary, from the Course or Section menu.
  2. 2. Select the check boxes for the assignment(s) you wish to edit.
  3. 3. Click the Modify Dates button to open the Modify Dates page. (You may need to click Show All Options if the Modify Dates button is not available.)

  4. Note: Date modification is not supported for External Gradebook Column assignments.

  5. 4. Select the method best suited for your needs, either to Specify Same Dates for All, Specify Dates for Each, or Adjust all assignment dates based on the earliest Available Date (see the descriptions above for details).
  6. 5. If necessary, adjust the date for Available by using the calendar widget to enter a specific date and time.
  7. 6. (Optional) When using the option to Adjust all assignment dates based on the earliest Available Date, you can enter a new Available date in the date field that appears next to that option's link.
  8. The highlighted assignment is assigned your new Available date and all assignment dates are now set relative to this date. (Afterwards, you can adjust dates for individual assignments as needed.)

  9. 7. (Optional) Select a setting for Due by clicking No Due Date or entering a specific date and time.
  10. 8. (Optional) The Unavailable date and time can also be edited when the Specify Dates for Each view is selected.
    • ° By default, the Unavailable date/time is set to Same As Due Date.
    • ° If you don't want to set an Unavailable date, select No Unavailable Date.
    • ° To specify an Unavailable date that differs from the Due date, select the radio button next to the date field and edit the date and time as desired.
  11. 9. (Optional) Choose your preferences for Show Assignment Score by selecting Never, Immediately after take, or setting a specific date and time.
  12. 10. (Optional) Choose your preferences for Plus Show Details, Responses, Scores by selecting Never, Immediately after take, or setting a specific date and time.
  13. 11. Click Save dates to save your settings and return to the Assignments page. You may also click Cancel to exit without saving and return to the Assignments overview page.
