Managing Grades > Editing Grade Details

Editing Grade Details

For most assignments, CengageNOWv2 automatically evaluates the student's answers and then enters grades, scores, and other information as soon as the student completes the assignment. In some circumstances, however, you may find it necessary to manually edit assignment results for individual students or reopen an assignment take. Updates you make on the Edit Grade Details page are automatically reflected throughout CNOWv2.

Note: The scores of "in progress" assignments cannot be edited, however, you can delete takes and give full credit to specific items in Homework and Test assignments.

The Edit Grade Details page lets you view and edit the scores for individual students, preview and score items that require manual grading, manage assignment takes, send an email to students, give full credit, and enter comments for student viewing. You can access the Edit Grade Details page from the Gradebook page by clicking the score you wish to view or edit. You can also edit assignments marked with a grading status icon or the words "not taken."

Depending on the type of assignment and content, the upper section of the Edit Grade Details page supplies the following controls. (Also note that some controls can be disabled, depending on the grading status of your assignment.)

Note: After reviewing the descriptions for these controls, also see Editing Scores in Homework and Test Assignments or Editing Scores in External and ASP Assignments for specific instructions on editing your assignment type.

Course or Section

Displays the name of the course or the parent course and section containing the currently selected assignment.

View a different assignment

To edit grade details for a different assignment for the currently selected student, make a selection from the dropdown menu under View a different assignment.

View the grades for a different student

To edit the score for a different student for the currently selected assignment, choose a student's name in the dropdown menu under View the grades for a different student.

Save and Return

(ASP and External assignments only) Saves your work, adds one take to the student's assignment if there were none previously, and returns you to the Gradebook overview page.

Save Changes and Continue Editing

(ASP and External assignments only) Saves your changes in progress while you continue editing without leaving the Edit Grade Details page. It also can add one take to the student's assignment, if there were none previously.

Return Without Saving

(ASP and External assignments only) Allows you to exit and return to the Gradebook overview page without saving your changes. However, any deleted takes, reopened takes, or edits that were saved in progress are retained.

Email Student

Email individual students by clicking the Email Student button. This opens the Send Email page in a new window. See Emailing Users for more details.

Done

(Homework and Test assignments only) Saves your changes and returns you to the Gradebook page without adding a take. Any manually graded items not assigned a score are left as ungraded, and the assignment will continue to display the need for manually grading items (pencil icon) on your Gradebook page.

Assignment Score

(ASP and External assignments only) Allows you to view the student's overall assignment score and edit it by entering a value for the correct responses. (This yields the same result as changing it on the Assignment Details page). Any late penalty previously assigned still applies.

After changing the score an option to Reset to Electronic Grade appears, which allows you to return the score to its original, electronic grade.

Adjusted Score

Displays the score for the assignment in points, followed by the percentage equivalent in parentheses. If the assignment is assigned a Pass/Fail grading method, the grading status and points earned are provided as well.

Note: Score modifiers such as late or custom penalties, instructor score overrides, or curve adjustments are not factored into the actual score. These score adjustments are displayed separately in parenthesis if applied to the assignment.

Gradability

Displays whether the assignment is composed of items graded electronically, manually, or a mixed selection of both electronic and manual.

# of Attempts

Shows the number of assignment takes and the maximum takes allowed.

Grading

(Homework and Test assignments only) Supplies you with details on whether grading is completed or if there is a take in progress. If there are no takes, this field does not appear.

Time Spent

Displays the recorded amount of time the student has spent on this assignment.

The assignment Time Spent is the total of the time spent answering each question and any time the student spent at dialog boxes, reading messages, or loading items during the assignment.

Note: If the student's browser crashed or was closed after less than 2 minutes, the time may not be recorded.

Time Limit

Displays the amount of time allowed to complete the assignment or Unlimited if there are no time restrictions.

Started At

Displays the date and time the student started the assignment take.

Last Worked

Displays the date and time the student was last working on a take for the assignment.

Submitted At

Depending on the assignment's status this field can display Not Submitted, Reopened, not resumed, the time and date the student submitted the assignment, or the time and date when you last adjusted the score.

Submitted By

Depending on the event that triggers the submission method, this field can display one of the following values.

Take

For any assignment allowing multiple takes, you can click a specific Take to view it or use the check box to select a take to delete. The take with the best score is selected by default. The list of available takes is limited to the last 20 and you will see a notice if the assignment is in progress.

Re-Open Most Recent, Submitted Take

Use this feature when you want to allow a student to continue working on a previously submitted assignment. Your student can then click the Resume button on the Assignments page to proceed with the submitted take (the student's Assignments page may need to be refreshed for the button to display).

Click the Re-Open Most Recent, Submitted Take button (if available) to reset the most recent Take. This action cannot be undone and is automatically saved.

The Re-Open Most Recent, Submitted Take button may be disabled under the following conditions:

Delete Selected Take

After a student has taken an assignment, you can delete one or more specific takes. For example, if the student has an extended computer failure during a test, you may want to delete that take altogether so the student can use that attempt again.

Assignment Takes are displayed with sequential numbers and adjacent check boxes. Click the check box next to any take to select it, and click the Delete Selected Take button. The selected take is deleted and the student can start a fresh Take of the assignment again. This action cannot be undone and it is saved automatically.

Note: After deleting a take in an ASP or External assignment, do not click Save and Return or Save Changes and Continue Editing, as doing so automatically adds a take. Instead, click Return Without Saving.

Comment

(ASP and External assignments only) Use this field to enter a short note tracking your changes. The comment is also visible from the Notes column of your Student Grade Details page, and the Notes column in your student's Grades and Assignments pages.

Reset to Electronic Grade

To return your edited score back to its original value, select the check box for Reset to Electronic Grade and click Save and Return or Save Changes and Continue Editing. (Available for External and ASP assignments.)
