Creating a Reading Assignment

You can use Reading assignments to track your student's progress through their course eBook chapters. Even though course reading is ungraded self-study, you may wish to set up reading assignments as a way to verify students have reviewed specific material.

To create a Reading assignment

Be careful when choosing content for your assignments. Students must have current access rights to the textbook content you have selected.

  1. 1. Go to the Assignments page, and if necessary, make a new selection from the Course or Section dropdown menu.
  2. 2. Click Create Assignment and select the option for Reading assignments to open the assignment creation wizard.
  3. 3. Enter your assignment's name in the Name Your Assignment field.

  4. Note: (Optional) Click the icon to the left of the Name Your Assignment field to switch to a different assignment type.

  5. 4. Click the calendar icon in the header to open the Select Dates pane where you can enter your assignment's dates.
  6. 5. Use the calendar widget to enter dates for the Assignment Available On and Assignment Due On fields. (the Available Date is required)
  7. (Optional) Deselect the check box in the Assignment Unavailable On column to set an Assignment Unavailable On date.

  8. 6. Click Done in the calendar widget when you are finished setting dates or click Cancel to exit without saving. The dates you set will appear in the heading.
  9. 7. Find the appropriate chapter for your assignment. (Click on the + or - icons next to an item to expand or collapse its contents.)
  10. 8. Select the chapter or section you want to use by clicking the Assign button.
  11. 9. (Optional) Set a Prerequisite by entering the appropriate values for one of the options: Assignment Score of, Score Percentage of, Is Assignment Taken, Time Spent On.
  12. 10. Click the Publish button at the top of the page when you are done.
  13. At this point, your assignment is complete and assigned to the current course. However, you still have the ability to work with and modify your assignment using the links on the Assignment Created page.

The Assignment Created page provides you with options to take the assignment as a student, edit the assignment, customize options for students, take the assignment offline, create a new assignment, or return to the Assignments page. See Using the Assignment Created Page for additional details.

  14. 11. If you are finished for now, you can click Return to the Assignments List.
