Internet Explorer Setup for Windows
CengageNOWv2 supports Windows Internet Explorer (IE) browser version 11.0 or greater. To check your system's version of IE, click the Help button in the browser toolbar and select About Internet Explorer
Caution: Use only the full version of Internet Explorer. If you currently use AOL, MSN, or another customized version that says "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by . . . ," see Using a Second Browser for CengageNOWv2.
Configuring Internet Explorer for CengageNOWv2
The following settings will help you get the best performance from CengageNOWv2 with Internet Explorer. If you have problems with CengageNOWv2 later on, begin your troubleshooting by reconfirming these settings.
Follow the links for details on each setting.
Optimizing Internet Explorer Browser Permissions
Browser permissions determine how the IE browser interacts with the CengageNOWv2 website. You can fine-tune IE to perform its best with CengageNOWv2 in just a few minutes following these procedures (IE 11 shown).
To set text size in Internet Explorer
To set security levels in Internet Explorer
- 1. Start Internet Explorer and click the Tools icon .
- 2. Select Internet options and click the Security tab.
- ° To change settings for any security zone, select the appropriate zone icon, and then move the slider to the desired security level (High or Medium High).
- ° To create your own security settings for a zone, select the zone icon, and then select Custom level and choose your preferred settings.
- ° To restore all security levels to their original settings, select the Reset all zones to default level button.
- 3. Click Apply. Click OK to exit if you are done.
To optimize security settings in Internet Explorer
- 1. Start Internet Explorer and click the Tools icon .
- 2. Select Internet Options and click the Security tab.
- 3. Select the Trusted Sites zone and click the Sites button.
Clear the check box for Require Server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
- 4. In the Add this website to the zone field, type *.cengagenow.com and click Add.
- 5. Click Close to close the Trusted sites window.
- 6. On the Security tab click the Custom level... button and the Security Settings - Trusted Sites Zone window will open.
- 7. Scroll down to the ActiveX area.
Ensure that all ActiveX options are set to Enable or Prompt.
- 8. While you are still on the Security Settings window, scroll down to the Miscellaneous area, and make sure the Allow META REFRESH option is set to Enable.
- 9. Click OK to close the Security Settings - Trusted Sites Zone window, and then click OK again in the Internet Options window.
- 10. Close and restart Internet Explorer to start browsing with the new settings.
Enabling IE Cookies
CengageNOWv2 uses cookies to recognize you and your permissions when you sign in. Here's how to enable them in IE 11.0.
To enable cookies in Internet Explorer
- 1. Start Internet Explorer and click the Tools icon .
- 2. Select Internet options and click the Privacy tab.
- 3. Move the Settings slider to High or Medium High.
- 4. Click OK.
Note: If you cannot see the slider bar, follow the next few steps to turn off the Override automatic cookie handling option.
- 5. From Tools > Internet options > Privacy, click the Advanced button.
The Advanced Privacy Settings window will open.
- 6. Uncheck Override automatic cookie handling and click OK.
- 7. Adjust the Settings slider, if necessary, and click OK to save your changes.
Enabling Pop-up Windows in Internet Explorer
CengageNOWv2 uses pop-ups to display error messages and the Help system. Here's how to enable them in IE 11.0.
To enable pop-ups in Internet Explorer
To enable pop-ups in Internet Explorer for CengageNOWv2 only
- 1. Start Internet Explorer and click the Tools icon .
- 2. Select Internet options and click the Privacy tab.
- 3. Under Pop-up Blocker click the Settings button.
- 4. In the Address of website to allow field, type *.cengagenow.com, and click Add.
The URL will appear in the box under Allowed sites.
- 5. Click Close and click OK in the Internet Options window.
Note: There are many third-party pop-up blockers (Google, Yahoo!, etc.) available for internet browsers. If you are using any of these, consult their instructions for allowing pop-ups.
Configuring Page Refresh in IE
Your browser cache settings determine how Web pages are stored or refreshed in your system's memory. Optimal cache settings help display your CengageNOWv2 pages quickly and correctly.
To configure page refresh in Internet Explorer
- 1. Start Internet Explorer and click the Tools icon .
- 2. Select Internet options and click the General tab.
- 3. In the Browsing history section, click the Settings button.
The Website Data Settings window opens.
- 4. Select the Temporary Internet Files tab, if it isn't already selected.
- 5. Under Check for newer versions of stored pages, select Automatically.
- 6. Click OK and then OK again in the Internet Options window to exit.
Clearing the Cache and Cookies in Internet Explorer
If you experience browser problems when running CengageNOWv2 in Internet Explorer, a good first troubleshooting step is to clear your IE browser cache and cookies. (You will need to reselect your school the next time you sign in to CengageNOWv2.)
To clear the IE cache and cookies
- 1. Start Internet Explorer and click the Tools icon .
- 2. Select Internet options and click the General tab.
- 3. In the Browsing history section, click the Delete button.
The Delete Browsing History window opens.
- 4. Select Temporary Internet Files and website files and Cookies and website data.
- 5. Click Delete.
- 6. Click OK in the Internet Options window.
Enabling JavaScript in Internet Explorer
CengageNOWv2 requires JavaScript for many of its functions. If many features are not working, it may be that you simply need to enable JavaScript in your browser before starting CengageNOWv2.
To enable JavaScript in Internet Explorer
- 1. Start Internet Explorer and click the Tools icon .
- 2. Select Internet options and click the Security tab.
- 3. Make sure that Internet is highlighted in the Select a zone to view or change security settings pane.
- 4. Click Custom level....
- 5. Scroll down to the Scripting heading.
- 6. Select Enable for Active scripting. You may also opt for IE11 to Prompt you to permit scripts to run.
- 7. Click OK again in the Internet Options window.
