Setting up Courses and Sections
This section covers how to set up and organize your courses, along with any sections or folders that might be required. Before you can create a course, be sure to have at least one current Cengage eBook registered to your instructor account. You can then create a new course in minutes, or quickly copy or import an existing course (and most of its contents) for re-use.
When creating a course you have the following options:
- Choose an institution for your course. If you teach at more than one institution using CengageNOWv2, all your courses are available from any of your CNOWv2 accounts. When creating a course, however, it may be necessary for you to change accounts to associate the course with the appropriate school. See Managing Multiple Institutions for more details.
- Build a Course Manually. Use this option to create a new course shell. You will add assignments and students later. For more details, see Building a Course Manually.
- Copy an Existing Course. Use this option to choose between creating a course from a copy of one of your existing courses or by using one of your textbook's template courses. For an overview, see Copying an Existing Course.
- ° See Starting with a Course Already in Your Account for detailed information on using a course already in your account.
- ° See Modifying a Template Course Designed by Cengage for information on using a pre-made course and assignments. (This option is not available for all textbooks.)
- Import a Course via a File Previously Exported from CengageNOWv2. Use this process to import and adapt a previously exported course from another CengageNOWv2 account or institution. For details, see Importing a Course.
Generally, instructors set up their own courses. At other schools, however, courses may be set up by an administrator or lead instructor, particularly for large classes with multiple sections such as discussion groups or labs. With course sections grouped under the parent course, the lead instructor can control assignment lists and grading across all of the sections. For more on creating sections for an existing course, see Creating Course Sections.
By default, your new courses are created in your Courses folder. You can create your own sub-folders to organize courses and sections by class, department, term, or whatever works best for your school. See Creating and Managing Course Folders for more information.
