Choosing an Assignment Type
Selecting the type of assignment is your first step in the assignment creation wizard. This section provides an overview of the characteristics of each assignment type. Depending on the content available from your book, you may see some or all of the following choices in the assignment creation wizard.
Note: Test and Homework assignments have many similarities and identical options. The default option settings are more restrictive for Test assignments, however, these settings can be edited. These two assignment types give you the most control over content selection and option settings.
- Homework. Homework assignments present book content in an assessment with an open-ended approach. This assignment type can be used to assign points based on the students' knowledge base and can also prepare students for exams. With Homework assignments you are able to preview and select up to 150 individual items, including any self-authored questions.
Default options for Homework assignments include unlimited takes, unlimited time per take, save and resume, and a score progress display that updates after each answer. You can also allow students to print the assignment, print individual items, or specify how many times students can view the available question feedback.
See Creating Homework and Test Assignments for detailed instructions.
- Test. Test assignments present material in a stricter, evaluation setting and allow you to assess your students' mastery of specific concepts. You can preview and select up to 150 individual items for your Test assignment, including any self-authored questions. The process for creating a Test is largely the same as for Homework assignments, but the default settings for the assignment options differ. See Creating Homework and Test Assignments for more details.
The default settings for Tests include one allowed take, no score progress display, and no question feedback or resources. You can change the number of takes, the time allowed per take, allow printing of items or blank assignments, restrict access with a password, among other options. See Default Options in Assignment Types for more information on the differences between Test and Homework assignments.
- Adaptive Study Plans. Adaptive Study Plans (ASP) are prebuilt assignments providing a unique way for students to build a knowledge base in fundamental concepts for your course. Students can start with a preliminary quiz of randomized questions to identify their knowledge gaps, then work through the suggested study materials until mastery is achieved on the required topics.
Adaptive Study Plans can be taken prior to class and as many times as desired with no overwriting. Students have the option to explore their objectives or take the quiz in any order and can save their work and resume their assignment take at a later time.
See Creating an Adaptive Study Plans Assignment for more details.
- Reading. The Reading assignment type allows you to assign a chapter or section as a starting point in your course eBook. Reading assignments are ungraded, however, you can use this assignment to direct students to specific material and track their time spent. You can also set an available date, a due date, an unavailable date, or add an optional prerequisite.
See Creating a Reading Assignment for more details.
- External Assignment. External assignment types allow you to direct students to online material from outside CengageNOWv2 as a graded assignment in your course. Assignment options include number of takes, settings for grading, availability of post-take feedback, and setting a prerequisite.
See Creating an External Assignment for more details.
Note: You can create an External Gradebook Column as a Gradebook "place holder." This allows you to enter points for any offline assignments you would like included in the CengageNOWv2 course score. See Using an External Gradebook Column for more information.
